ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro is urging the House of Representatives to investigate the recent sinking of motorboat MB Princess Aya in Binangonan, Rizal, which resulted in the drowning of 27 passengers.

Castro, a House deputy minority leader and member of the Makabayan bloc, says there is a need to determine the cause of the tragedy and hold those responsible accountable.

"We cannot allow such tragic incidents to go unnoticed. It is our duty as representatives of the people to ensure that justice is served and that measures are put in place to prevent similar accidents in the future," she said.

Princess Aya capsized Friday, July 28, just as Super Typhoon "Egay" was exiting the Philippines.

"We need to examine if proper safety measures were in place, if the vessel was seaworthy, and if the crew had the necessary training and qualifications. These are critical questions that must be answered," she noted.

Castro also called on Congress to review existing maritime laws and regulations to strengthen safety standards and ensure the protection of passengers.

"We must do all we can to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring again like here, in Guimaras, even that in Bohol. This includes reviewing and updating our laws to ensure the safety and welfare of those who travel by sea," she further said.

A resolution to seek such House inquiry in aid of legislation is being drafted as of this posting, Castro's office said.
