Storm-enhanced 'habagat' rains may persist in Luzon, Visayas — PAGASA
Occasional rains from the enhanced southwest monsoon, locally called “habagat,” may continue to prevail over Luzon and Visayas in the next few days, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, July 30.
The habagat is still being enhanced by the severe tropical storm Falcon (international name: Khanun), which further intensified on Sunday afternoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 135 kph.
PAGASA last located the center of Falcon 1,170 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, while moving northward at 20 kph, as of 4 p.m.
Its trough or extension may bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the Bicol Region and Northern Samar.

Although it is not expected to make landfall, PAGASA said Falcon may continue to enhance the effects of the southwest monsoon, which could bring occasional rains to Luzon and Visayas. In the next 24 hours, scattered to widespread heavy monsoon rains may affect Zambales and Bataan. Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, northern Palawan, including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, may experience light to heavy rains. Scattered monsoon rain showers and thunderstorms may also prevail over the rest of Luzon and Visayas, while the rest of the country may have isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. “Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days,” PAGASA said. Falcon will likely be outside the country’s area of responsibility on Monday evening, July 31, or Tuesday morning, Aug. 1.
