Families evacuated in Marikina amid enhanced 'habagat' rains

Nearly 300 families have preemptively evacuated their homes on Saturday night, July 29, after the Marikina River water level rose to 16 meters, triggering the 2nd alarm. As of 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, July 30, 208 families remain in the city's evacuation centers, said Marikina Mayor Marcelino "Marcy" Teodoro in a radio interview. Majority of the families came from low-lying areas in the city, namely Barangays Malanday, Nangka and Tumana. No major flooding has been reported in the city. The mayor noted that their efforts in dredging the Marikina River has helped increase the carrying capacity of the river to reduce flooding. Teodoro said that their 34 evacuation centers around the city remain open in case heavy rains persist and the Marikina River water level warning system resets. On July 29, the water level reached 15 meters at 5:26 p.m., signaling the first alarm. It quickly rose to 16 meters at 7:07 p.m. As of 9:07 p.m., the water level reached 16.7 meters. The critical level wherein forced evacuations will be enforced will occur when the water level hits 18 meters. From 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. on July 30, the water level gradually decreased and the alert was reverted to the first alarm. As of 10:23 a.m., the water level is at 15.2 meters. The first alarm was lifted at 12 p.m. when the water level returned to a normal level of 14.9 meters. It has slowly decreased to 14.6 meters as of 2 p.m. The planned opening ceremony for the "Palarong Pambansa" on Monday, July 31 will continue, rain or shine, Teodoro added. The heavy rains that battered many areas in Metro Manila were due to the enhanced southwest monsoon brought by Severe Tropical Storm Falcon. Metro Manila is currently under the yellow rainfall warning. The public is cautioned to be alert and prepared for possible flooding amid experiencing light to moderate rains. Just three days prior, the Marikina River also reached 16 meters due to Super Typhoon Egay. Teodoro said no flooded areas in the city was reported at the time, and only some 12 families voluntarily evacuated their homes.
