Mayor Joy urges QC residents to observe preventive measure vs dengue, leptospirosis
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte urged residents to observe preventive measures to reduce the rising cases of dengue and leptospirosis in the city, especially during the rainy season.
“In order to make our community safe from dengue and leptospirosis, let us start with protecting our families by cleaning our surroundings and making sure that preventive measures are in place,” Mayor Belmonte said.
The Quezon City Epidemiology & Disease Surveillance Unit (QCESU) has reported 1,160 cases of dengue, including one death in Barangay Krus na Ligas from January 1 to June 24, 2023.
Belmonte urged the residents to get tested for dengue if they experience symptoms and practice securing self-protection measures such as wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts, using mosquito repellant; support fogging or spraying in identified hotspots, and; seek early consultation.
The city government and barangay officials also conduct "search and destroy" operations to eliminate the breeding places of mosquitoes.
They also encouraged QCitizens to join clean-up drives.
The city also logged a total of 32 leptospirosis cases from January 1 to June 24, 2023 where dour residents of Barangays Payatas, Old Balara, Pasong Tamo, and Talipapa died.
The City Health Department reminded residents to seek consultation in the nearest hospital or health center if they are experiencing leptospirosis symptoms such as high fever, red eyes, abdominal pain, headache, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and yellowed skin or eyes.
The local government reminded residents to avoid swimming in potentially contaminated water, wear protective clothing, stay away from dead or sick animals, and cover skin lesions with waterproof dressing.
