Magnitude 4.9 quake jolts Sarangani — Phivolcs


A 4.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Sarangani province on Monday evening, July 3, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The earthquake's epicenter, which struck at approximately 6:20 p.m. was located 15 kilometers from Kiamba, Sarangani.

It occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter.

The tremor was recorded by Phivolcs' instruments at Intensity V (strong) in Kiamba, Sarangani; Intensity III (weak) in General Santos City and Maitum in Sarangani; Intensity II (slightly felt) in Alabel and Malungon in Sarangani; and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Maasim in Sarangani, Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental, Koronadal City, Polomolok and Tampakan in South Cotabato, and Kalamansig in Sultan Kudarat.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, it does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
