Mayor Marcy calls for preservation of 'Larong Pinoy'

As the "Palarong Pambansa" or National Games officially begin on Saturday, July 29, Marikina City Mayor Marcelino "Marcy" Teodoro called for the preservation and promotion of traditional or indigenous Filipino games and sports.

“It is very important to preserve our culture and sports. A community’s identity and heritage are defined by its culture. Its preservation helps future generations in understanding their ancestors’ roots, customs, and values, providing a sense of belonging and continuity,” said Teodoro.

“Culture and sports preservation benefit the society, build communities, and contribute to a more peaceful and united country,” he added.

"Larong Pinoy" are games that originated from the country's pre-colonial history and has been passed down through the generations. They incorporate the ingenuity and creativity of the early Filipinos, emphasizing their resourcefulness and communal character that focuses on teamwork and sportsmanship.

An exhibition of Filipino games, including "Kadang-kadang," "Tumbang Preso," and "Patintero," was conducted on Friday, July 28, at the Marikina Sports Center (MSC) Gymnasium. It was participated by the delegations of the 17 regions. 10 members from each delegation were chosen to showcase the games.

Other games shown in the exhibition were cheerdance, weightlifting, and obstacle course. Dancesports and Pencak Silat were also included as demonstration sports.

Teodoro and Francis Cesar Bringas, assistant secretary for operations of the Department of Education (DepEd), facilitated the exhibitions.

The Palarong Pambansa first included "Larong Pinoy" in its exhibition roster in 2019 when it was hosted by Davao. The games presented were "Kadang-kadang," "Patintero," "Hilahang-lubid," and "Karera ng Sako."

The Palaro begins on Saturday and will run until Aug. 5. The opening ceremony for the games will be held on Monday, July 31.
