Diaz's niece, two others, shine in Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting tourney
Alexsandra Ann Diaz, niece of Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, made heads turn after capturing one gold and two silver medals in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in India on Friday, July 28.
A product of her aunt’s weightlifting school in Zamboanga City, the younger Diaz ruled the snatch event after lifting 57 kilograms before posting 66 kg to settle for the silver in the clean and jerk. Her total of 123 kg managed her to gain the silver in the women’s 40kg Group A division. Vietnam’s Nguyen Phuong Linh reigned supreme with a 124 kg total lift after claiming the silver in snatch with 56 kg and the gold in clean and jerk with 76 kg. India’s Jyoshna Sabar took home three bronze medals after registering 55 kg in snatch, 64 in clean and jerk, and 119 kg in total. Meanwhile, Prince Keil Delos Santos and Eron Borres collected three gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the men’s 49kg class. Delos Santos snared two gold medals in the snatch with a 94-kg effort and total with 210 kg, as well as a bronze in clean and jerk with 116 kg. Borres, for his part, came in bronze in snatch with 91 kgs, then topped the clean and jerk with 119 kg to finish with a silver in total with 210 kg. So far, the PH team has four golds, three silver and two bronzes after the first day of competition.
