Two taxi drivers were arrested by operatives of the Makati City Police on July 26 for stealing a foreigner's phone in Mandaluyong City, the Southern Police District (SPD) said.
Police identified the suspects as John Tiglao Perez, 44, and Miguelito Cerilo Llanera, 37.
According to the police report, a 37-year-old Chinese national rode the taxi of one of the suspects on July 25 from his residence on Valero St. going to Three Central in Brgy. Bel-Air, Makati City.
Upon reaching the intersection of Osmeña Highway and Mascardo St. in Barangay Bangkal, the driver asked the victim if he knows the way to his destination.
The victim handed his iPhone 12 Pro Max to the driver to show the direction.
The driver then parked his taxi and handed the cellphone to the other suspect and instructed the victim to transfer to the latter's taxicab, saying it will take him to his destination.
As soon as the victim got off the vehicle, the two taxicabs sped off towards EDSA, taking with them the cellphone of the victim.
The victim immediately reported the incident to the Bangkal Police Substation.
Responding police received a tip from a concerned citizen that the suspects were seen along Boni St. in Mandaluyong City, where they were later arrested.
The victim positively identified the suspects as the taxi drivers who took away his cellphone.
During initial investigation, the police found out that Perez and Llanera were also involved in multiple theft incidents victimizing foreign nationals in Makati City.
The two suspects are facing theft charges, police said.
