A "victory for justice".

That's how Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas described the acquittal of activist Reina Mae Nasino and her companions on charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

"We welcome this decision as it highlights the failure of the prosecution to provide sufficient evidence to prove their guilt beyond reasonable doubt," Brosas, a member of the militant Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives.

"The acquittal of Reina Mae Nasino and her companions is a victory for justice and the recognition of their innocence. It is a testament to the flawed and baseless charges brought against them," she said.

Brosas underscored that Nasino's legal victory "comes after years of unjust detention, and tragically, after the passing of her daughter, Baby River, in 2020".

"The tragic circumstances surrounding Nasino's time in detention, particularly the loss of her daughter, Baby River, have exposed the urgent need for the courts to consider humanitarian considerations in cases involving vulnerable individuals," said the veteran congresswoman.

"Moving forward, we will continue to push for accountability for those responsible for the injustices faced by Nasino and other activists," Brosas said.
