Water at tip of Florida may set new world record for warmest seawater

LOS ANGELES, United States -- The water temperature around the tip of Florida in the United States has hit hot tub levels, and may have set new world record for the warmest seawater, according to US media reports.

A buoy in Manatee Bay of Florida showed an ocean temperature reading of over 101 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday evening, the latest sign of record heat in the coastal waters, according to CNBC. The temperature was recorded about five feet below the surface off South Florida's east coast. The day before that same buoy recorded a water temperature of 100.2 degrees Fahrenheit. That would unofficially break the world record of 99.68 degrees Fahrenheit set in the Persian Gulf, ClickOrlando reported. The high temperatures in the region are threatening the coral reef in the area, which typically thrive at temperatures between 73 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
