‘Egay’ leaves 1 dead, hurts 3, displaces 639 in Baguio City


BAGUIO CITY – One person was killed, three were injured, and 639 were affected by typhoon “Egay” here on Wednesday, July 26.

The Baguio City Police Office said the fatality was a 16-year-old student, who, along with his parents, was trapped inside their home after a landslide hit Barangay Bakakeng Central around 10:30 a.m.

Responders extricated his parents, a 59-year-old construction worker and 48-year-old housewife, from the rubble.

In a situational report at 5 p.m. on July 26, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the City Social Welfare and Development Office reported that 145 families or 639 individuals were affected in Barangays Irisan, Lourdes Subdivision Extension, Camp Allen, and San Roque due to 69 flooding, 15 landslides, 11 blown roof, and nine fallen tree incidents.

Three houses were totally destroyed and 65 were partially damaged.

The CDRRMO headed by officer-in-charge Glenn Lardizabal and supervised by Mayor Benjamin Magalong and acting Mayor Faustino Olowan activated the operations center at the onset of rains and coordinated response to reported incidents with teams from other city government offices, line agencies, volunteer groups, and private companies.

Reported incidents were 97 leaning, fallen trees, and branches, 20 electrical concerns, 12 flooding, eight soil erosion, two stranded people and vehicle, 11 landslides, and two clogged drainage.

The Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) restored power in 60 percent of Baguio City and Benguet province as of 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

However, Beneco noted the sheer damage to its distribution system. An initial cost of damage was placed at more than P2.6 million.

Water supply in many areas was also affected.

Marcos Highway and Naguilian Road remain open as the Department  of Public Works and Highways said road clearing operations are continuing in stretches affected by storm signals.

The DPWH advised people to “observe extra caution while on the road and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.”

The City Emergency Operations Center remains on red alert status as response operations continue on the incidents reported.
