Tulfo: 'Can-afford' inmates enjoy week-long 'family bonding', online shopping, other perks in Bilibid
New Bilibid Prison (NBP)
The good life continues for certain privileged inmates at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City in the form of lengthy conjugal visits, fast food deliveries, online shipping, and high-powered firearms. Thus, said ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo who bared such details during a press briefing inside his office Wednesday afternoon, July 26. Citing information from an inmate-slash-source, Tulfo said that the construction of "kubols" or private spaces within the 10.87-hectare maximum security compound of the NBP have continued. But only the "can-afford" inmates get to enjoys such benefits as they allegedly cost a pretty penny, the neophyte congressman said. "We really need to conduct an inquiry into this matter because ongoing pa rin po...pwede pa silang mag-order ng mga fast food, nakakapasok pa po yung mga fast food chain (it's still ongoing...they can still order fast food, the fast food deliveries can still enter)," Tulfo said. He declined to identify the involved fast food chains. "Ayon sa source ko mayroon pang nagma-'mine' ng live [selling] (According to my source, there are even those that say 'mine' during live selling)," Tulfo noted. This suggests the proliferation of Internet-capable devices within prison such as smart phones. He said that a kubol could be "rented" for up to one week and used by the paying inmate and his or her family. "One week bonding," he said. The former Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) secretary also shared an alleged video of a shootout between rival factions taken within NBP. He observed that the gunfire sounded like it came from an automatic firearm--another worrying detail. "These people na who did something, who did crime, should do the time. Unfortunately yung time nila roon are spent nicely, very, very comfortable, more comfortable pa po sa buhay natin siguro (probably even more comfortable than our lives)," Tulfo said.
