Gihun Ng Yoo, an incoming Grade 9 student at St. Joseph School Iloilo, bested 1,275 competitors from 17 countries in the competition at Yonsei University in the South Korean capital of Seoul recently.

Yoo was able to solve mathematical equations such as polynomials, square roots, factorizations, linear functions, and quadratic equations.

The competition also tested the ability of Yoo, whose mother is an Ilonggo, in logical reasoning, word problems, and puzzles.

Yoo said he did not expect to win silver, especially when he was infected with dengue days before flying out of the country.

Math coaches Albert Gumana and Irish Mae Palomo lauded Yoo’s determination and will to still compete and eventually win the silver medal.

This was not the first major victory for Yoo in overseas math contests.

Last year, Yoo was part of a 14-member Philippine team that ended second runner-up in the team category-exploration round of the Asian Science and Mathematics Olympiad for Primary and Secondary Schools (ASMOPSS 12) in Bali, Indonesia.
