QC, Pasig City sign MOU for SPARK project

Quezon City and Pasig City have partnered with the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) and Local Government (ICLEI) for Sustainability to implement the Sparking Active Mobility Actions for Climate Friendly Cities or “Spark Project” in order to improve and promote active transportation in the city on Tuesday July 25. Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte together with the ICSC Exec. Director Angelo Kairos dela Cruz, Pasig City Administrator lawyer Jeronimo Manzanero, and ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat Regional Director Victorino Aquitania signed the memorandum of understanding for the SPARK Project. The SPARK Project is a joint effort of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMUV). According to ICSC, SPARK Project is a 2.5-year effort with the goals of promoting active and environmentally friendly mobility, supporting emission reduction activities, and developing a secure and accessible transportation system in Quezon and Pasig Cities. ICSC aims to help attain an effective global climate action. ICLEI is focusing on Quezon City and Pasig City as project hubs. The SPARK Project in QC is intended to be implemented on Maginhawa Street in order to maximize promotion of the food and art hub there. Its goal is to bring sustainability to a rapidly developing urban world. According to Belmonte, she will wholeheartedly support the project as it is in line with her administration's 14-point agenda which include the building of "a livable, green,and sustainable city." Mayor Joy said the city will expand the bike lanes up to 350 kilometers by 2025. Along with the repair of sidewalks, open spaces are also being transformed into parks.
