The Philippine National Police (PNP) is seeking clarification with Malacañang if the acceptance of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.’s resignation of its 18 senior officers means that they would no longer be connected to the police organization. PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr. said they have not received a copy of the decision of the President and this is the reason why it seeks a meeting with Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin to discuss and clarify some issues. “With regard to the pronouncement of the President, we respect that and with regard to the clarification if the acceptance of resignation is on the position or in the police service, I am requesting an official copy to determine on how it was worded,” said Acorda. “We are seeking the audience from Malacanang, on the level of the Executive Secretary, maybe to clarify these things,” he added. The courtesy resignation was an idea of Interior Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr. to get rid of police officials who are linked to illegal drugs activities amid allegations of resurgence of ninja cops, or those who recycle confiscated illegal drugs. Abalos earlier said that those whose courtesy resignation would be accepted would be deemed resigned from the police service. Malacañang earlier revealed the names of the 18 senior PNP officials whose resignations were accepted—three generals and 15 colonels. But it is not yet clear if the acceptance of resignation would mean that they would be delisted from the PNP’s roster of senior officers. Acorda said they would immediately implement it once everything is clarified. “Depending on how it is worded or how it will be decided upon, there is no other way other than implementing it but what I want to say is that the PNP under my leadership and with the support of all the officers here, we will be continuing our monitoring and investigation of not only these personnel who were mentioned but the other personnel,” said Acorda. Although some critics say that the filing of courtesy resignation means that the government has no solid pieces of evidence to run after PNP senior officers involved in illegal drugs, Acorda said the investigation will continue. “Most likely there will be cases filed, criminally and administratively. There are some of these names who have already been included in the recent investigation. I’ve seen some common names,” said Acorda.
