Marian Pastor Roces calls out Beauty Gonzalez for fashion faux pas
By Neil Ramos
Beauty Gonzalez was among those who exerted extra effort to glam it up at the recently concluded GMA gala.
Wearing a nude corseted gown made by Mara Chua, the 32-year-old actress completed her look wearing what she described as "centuries old gold neck piece and earrings" which were actually "excavated eye and mouth covers from distant places like Butuan and Surigao.”
According to Beauty, she collected these piece by piece through the years and had them reworked by her favorite jeweler, Requiza Fine Jewelry.
Not everyone's impressed.
Noted art critic and curator Marian Pastor Roces took to social media to castigate the actress.
She posted, "Someone tell this woman that the orifice covers she is paying 'homage' to are grave robber stuff. Because if these were legally excavated, the pieces would belong to the National Museum or the Bangko Sentral.
"Or: if the pieces were excavated decades ago and therefore privately owned by sensible collectors before current restrictions, the question still remains: why death masks as necklace?
"Sure, the owners have been dead for a thousand years. BUT.
This fashion victim is wearing mouth and eye covers: around 10 of them. Which is to say that the necklace was fashioned from excavations of many individuals. That is an astounding number of desecrated graves!
"How on earth is this an homage, exhibiting impunity and crassness? Wearing archaeological gold death pieces, flaunting excess, is odious.
"Ignorance (blended with arrogance) can't possibly be fashionable. GMA: shame on you."
