Agents of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) seized on Wednesday, July 26, multi-million peso worth of sugar and wheat flour in three separate raids on large warehouses in Quezon City and two other areas.
BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui, Jr. led the raid of J. Poon and Son Warehouse located at 93 Sgt. Rivera St. in Quezon City. The two other raids were conducted in Naga City and Calaca, Batangas.
He revealed that the warehouse in Quezon City belong to two companies, both of which face closure due to their alleged failure to register properly and issue receipts to buyers.
Lumagui pointed out that the warehouses only issued manual receipts for insignificant purchases, and the BIR has no records of their electronic accounting and sales system registration.
Although the warehouses were fully stocked with flour and sugar, an exact estimation of the contents will only be available upon completion of the inventory.
Preliminary findings indicate that the commodities were sourced locally. Notably, the bags found in the warehouses bore the marks of Magnificent, Mayon, Davao Sugar Central, and Atlantic Grains.
Lumagui said tax evasion charges would be filed against the officers of the companies responsible for operating the warehouses.
