The latest update as of July 23 showed a significant increase compared to the last data on July 21 when the Department of Information and Communication (DICT) showed 104,334,729 registrants.

Globe Telecom, Inc. recorded 48,019,084 registrants; Smart Communications Inc. with 49,740,428; and 7,500,828 for DITO Telecommunity Corporation.

The extended period for SIM Card registration ends on July 25.

'We're within target'

"Ang (the) population is 110 million. So, I think we're within target of our goal," DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy said on July 21.

"Base sa datos from some of the telcos (telecommunication companies) yung tinatawag na revenue generating SIM, kung baga itong (ito yung) mga SIM na nag lo-load pa or itong (ito yung) mga SIM na nagbabayad ng postpaid, nasa 99 percent na sila. (Based on data from some of the telcos it is called revenue generating SIMs, those are SIMs that are still loading or these SIMs that are paying postpaid are already 99 percent)."

"So, I think we were already there, yung iba talagang either pasaway or ginagamit na talaga for mga scams at hindi talaga sila mag pa-parehistro (So, I think we were already there, the others are either stubborn or used for scams, and they do not really want to register)," Uy added.

Incomplete registrants expected

Uy said that DICT is not expecting a complete number of possible registrants due to the non-revenue SIMs when the extended deadline ends.

"We don't expect them (non-revenue SIM card holders) ever to register. Even if we extend up to 10 years, they will still not register," Uy said in a mix of English and Filipino.

"Yung mga sinasabing subscribers na hindi pa nakapag-register, 'yan yung mga non-revenue SIMs na yung natitira (Those subscribers who have not registered yet, are the non-revenue SIMs)," Uy explained.

"Those are the single-use SIM cards that the telemarketers and scammers used," he added.

As per the NTC, the number of subscribers as of December 2022 is 168,016,400. (Sonny Daanoy)
