San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora and his constituents have three issues that they want President Marcos to prioritize in his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 24.
In an interview, Zamora enumerated the three issues as the monitoring and lowering of consumer product prices, unemployment, and the Metro Manila subway which is said to be a key program in mitigating traffic and transportation issues.
"Unang una, dapat po ay mabigyan natin ng solusyon ang presyo ng mga bilihin. Isa po yan sa madalas ko rin hong naririnig sa ating mga mamamayan dito po sa San Juan. Yung presyo ng bilihin ay kinakailangang maibaba natin (First of all, we must find a solution to the rising prices of produce and commodities. This is one of the complaints that I usually hear from San Juaneños. The prices of goods must be lowered to become more affordable for Filipinos)," he said.
Zamora, who also serves as the Metro Manila Council (MMC) president, conducted several market inspections together with other key agencies of the national government to ensure that all vendors in Metro Manila's public markets strictly adhere to the the suggested retail price (SRP) issued by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
"Pangalawa, mahalaga na magkaroon po ng trabaho ang mga Pilipino. Isa po sa mga napakahalaga para sa isang tao ay magkaroon ng source of income upang magkaroon sila ng sariling kayod na magbibigay daan po upang sila ay kumita ng pera para sa kanilang mga pamilya (Second, it is important for Filipinos to have stable jobs because it is essential for them to be able to provide for their families)," Zamora said.
On July 8, Marcos said the government's priority is to provide employment to the people following the May 2023 Labor Force Survey, which showed that unemployment and underemployment rates in the country fell to 4.3 percent and 11.7 percent, respectively, in May 2023. The country's unemployment was 6.0 percent in May 2022, while the underemployment rate during the same period was 14.5 percent.
"Pangatlo, ako po ay umaasa na dadami pa ho yung mga subway systems natin na sana ho ay may dumaan pong subway dito po sa lungsod ng San Juan sapagkat alam kong marami ang makikinabang dito (Third, I am hoping that there will be a lot more subway systems to be created and developed that could also pass through the city of San Juan because a lot of residents here will surely benefit from it)," the mayor explained.
The president had earlier led the groundbreaking ceremony for a portion of Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP), specifically Contract Package 104 (CP104) of the MMSP - Ortigas and Shaw Boulevard Stations and Tunnels.
He said the project is expected to benefit around 150,000 passengers a day by 2028,and would not only cut the travel time of commuters, sparing themselves the perils of commuting, but would also lead to more business opportunities and additional economic activity.
With assistance and funding from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is aiming to partially commence operations of the subway in 2025.
