Once a SIM gets deactivated, Uy said that a user will lose access to their number. Users will not be able to make calls or texts and will also lose access to their e-wallets. On October 10, 2022, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., signed into law Republic Act No. 11934, An Act Requiring the Registration of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), or the SIM Registration Law. According to the law, failure to register the existing SIM within the periods prescribed herein shall result in the automatic deactivation of the SIM. The deactivated SIM may only be reactivated after registration in accordance with the said law. However, Uy reiterated on Friday, July 21, that the July 25 deadline will not be extended. "July 25 is a hard deadline. Yung matitigas ang ulo, please magparehistro na kayo dahil by 12:01 ng July 26, wala nang connectivity ang mga hindi nagpa rehistro ng SIM card," said Uy. According to DICT, the said law aims to protect citizens from fraudulent acts perpetrated through phone calls and text messages. DICT has repeatedly reminded the public that failure to register will result in the deactivation of the SIM, which means the subscriber will not be able to use it. And if an individual intends to buy a new SIM, he/she would need to register first before the SIM is activated.
