A report conducted by the Center for Women’s Resources (CWR) found that more than 21.14 million Filipinas were "economically insecure" during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s first year of administration. This data, cited in the report called "Ambitious Promises and Agendas: The Status of Filipino Women in the First Year of the Marcos Jr. Administration," came from the Labor Force Survey in May 2023, said CWR Research Coordinator Brenda Yasay. Yasay explained that this number includes those who are unemployed (996,000), those who lack work and income or are underemployed (1.90 million), and those who are not in the labor force (18.25 million). "This means that Filipino women are more vulnerable to hunger, poverty, and violence," she said. Moreover, various forms of abuse and exploitation are being faced by women in the country alongside the worsening socioeconomic crisis, the official noted. "The inaction or neglect to address women's needs has been glaring which has led to the escalation of abuse. The women’s situationer reported that in 2022, there were 24,635 reported cases of women and children being abused," CWR said, noting that this equates to about 75 victims each day in 2022, or three victims per hour. CWR Executive Director Cham Perez stated that Pinays remain at risk of being exploited by human traffickers and prostitution dens due to a lack of decent work and a living wage. Women and children are also more likely to be victims of various types of state-perpetrated abuse as a result of communities' continuing militarization and the expansion of American military posts, she noted. "The report paints a grim picture of the state of Filipino women during the first year of Marcos Jr.'s administration. Despite promises of progress and development, more women continue to be economically insecure and exposed to various forms of abuse, including state violence. It is imperative for women to raise their voices, collectively take action, and demand accountability for a meaningful change," CWR said.
