From nine IMAX screens alone, “Oppenheimer” earned P19.018 million in five days to become the highest-grossing IMAX release of 2023. From regular 2D screens, the movie raked in P38.74 million. This became the second biggest Saturday opening for a Universal Pictures release (next to “Fast X” and ahead of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”). It also emerged in the Philippines as the third biggest weekend opening for a Nolan film, after “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Dark Knight,” but ahead of “Batman Begins.” Despite its R-16 rating and a limited market share, the first weekend box-office reflects a 650 percent increase in initial forecast and is poised to reach at least P100 million in the next few days or weeks. The film stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer along with Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Matthew Modine, Tom Conti, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Benny Safdie and Josh Peck. “Like it or not, J. Robert Oppenheimer is the most important person who ever lived. He made the world we live in, for better or for worse. And his story must be seen to be believed,” said Nolan. Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist, was born 1904 and he died in 1967. According to the Atomic Heritage Foundation, “During the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer was director of the Los Alamos Laboratory and responsible for the research and design of an atomic bomb. He is often known as the ‘father of the atomic bomb.’” From Universal Pictures International, “Oppenheimer” is now showing nationwide in 227 cinemas.
