After a string of impressive victories in ONE Championship, he’s setting his sights on achieving his ultimate dream – a showdown with former two-division ONE World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen.
“Martin fought a lot of my older Team Lakay brothers, so I want to have that opportunity to fight him,” Alvarez said.
Of course, the 24-year-old Baguio City native is referring to Nguyen’s separate encounters with Eduard “Landslide” Folayang and Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, who are now teammates under the Lions Nation MMA banner.
Nguyen made history as the first athlete to hold two ONE World Titles simultaneously when he knocked out Folayang in the second round of their November 2017 joust to capture the lightweight strap.
However, the Vietnamese-Australian sensation failed in his bid to add more gold to his collection when he sustained a crushing unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Belingon for the ONE Interim Bantamweight World Championship in July 2018.
Most recently, Nguyen re-signed with the promotion and is looking to return to action later this year.
While it may take a while before he gets a date with the current No. 4-ranked featherweight contender, “The Limitless” hopes his next outing will land him a spot on ONE Championship’s global events that air live on Amazon Prime in the United States.
“My main goal is to get on the big cards,” he said.
So far, Alvarez has captured the attention of fans and pundits alike with his back-to-back finishes under the ONE Friday Fights brand.
Alvarez left a lasting impression in his debut, thwarting Reza Abasi in under 10 minutes with his devastating top game and ground-and-pound.
He then picked up a scintillating submission win against Sadegh Ghasemi this past Friday, July 14, by way of D’Arce choke in the second round.
With two consecutive victories in astounding fashion, the Team Lakay standout feels that he is ready to strut his wares on a much bigger stage.
“I’ve finished both of my opponents so far in ONE Friday Fights, so I’m hoping to get that main-roster contract for my next fight,” Alvarez said.
Alvarez is eager to prove himself opposite any worthy opponent once more, even if it means facing a notable name in his division.
“There are a lot of good fighters in my weight class, and they’re all heavy hitters. Whoever they want to put up against me, I'll face them," he said.
