Actress-comedian Marietta Subong, better known as Pokwang, talked candidly about her relationship with actor William Lee O'Brian and how she learned not to give all of herself a year after she confirmed that they have parted ways since November 2021. Pokwang revealed that she saw red flags in O'Brian that she first ignored until they had to part ways. In an interview with Luis Manzano at 'Luis Listens' last July 11, Pokwang said: “Wala na Respeto…naramdaman ko na parang ‘Ah okay, hangin, eto ako oh." (There is no more respect…I felt as if I'm not there when here I was) The actress-comedian said that this made her feel frustrated when the word 'respect' is being overused by people. “Ngayon ang dali sabihin ‘I love you,’ ‘I respect you.’ Wag natin i-overuse yung mga words na yan…tapos di naman natin ginagawa. Kasi kung meron ka niyan di tayo aabot sa ganito,” Pokwang said. (Now it's easy to say 'I love you,' 'I respect you.' Let's not overuse those words…then we don't do it. Because if you have that, we won't get to this point) Their relationship became more complicated because of the involvement of business and the differences in their cultures. “Minsan natatawa ako na sinasabi na, ‘Kaya ka iniwan kasi bungangera ka.’ Excuse me! Di nga ako marunong mag English eh, di ko nga alam paano ko ie-express sa kaniya yung mga words…So ang nangyari na lang sa akin yung sumabog na lang, napuno na,” she said. (Sometimes I laugh when others say, 'That's why he left because you're talkative.' Excuse me! I'm not fluent in English, I don't know how to express myself to him through words…So what happened to me was I just exploded because I got full of it) Pokwang also opened up about how her ex-partner did not defend her from bashing. “Ako sanay ako na ‘pangit mo,’ ‘Di nga namin alam kung ano nagustuhan sayo ni Lee, napaka-pangit mo.’ Well, di naman ako pinagtanggol ng lolo mo ever since…Kaya di rin ako nagtataka,” she said. (I'm used to [receiving comments saying] 'You're ugly,' 'We don't even know what Lee liked about you, you're so ugly.' Well, he hasn't defended me ever since…So I'm not surprised) The actress-comedian also said that their daughter, Malia, is not having a hard time adjusting because the truth is, O'Brian, did not invest time in their child. “Wala siyang na-invest na bonding sa anak niya…Kung ikaw ba naman ay matiyagang magpakain, magpaligo, pasyal mo siya, jogging sa umaga. Wala ganon yung bata na natatandaan kaya siguro, hindi rin kami nahirapan na mag adjust si Malia,” the actress revealed. (He didn't invest any bonding with his daughter…The child doesn't remember anything such as patiently feeding her, bathing her, taking her out on a walk during the morning, so we didn't have a hard time for Malia to adjust) Despite all, Pokwang soldiered on. She said, “Wag masyado yung ‘I give my all.’ Kailangan balance lahat kasi pag lahat give my all ka, ayan ganyan nangyari.” (Don't give all of yourself. Everything needs to be balanced because if you always give your all, that's what happens) On June 13, Pokwang filed a petition for deportation against O'Brian; however, Lee filed a counter affidavit. Pokwang transferred to GMA 7 in 2021 after working under ABS-CBN for 17 years.
