The preparations for the 2023 “Palarong Pambansa” are in full swing. This year’s staging of the National Games will mark the first time that the sporting event would be held since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. As part of the preparations for the 2023 Palaro, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday, July 21, formalized its partnership with this year’s host --- Marikina City. Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte led the inspection of playing venues at the Marikina Sports Center. She also led the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between DepEd and the Marikina government for the hosting of the 2023 Palaro.
Indigenous Filipino games, new features
In a statement, DepEd said that the 2023 Palaro will feature Indigenous Filipino Games also known as “Laro ng Lahi” anew as an exhibition sport to emphasize the “essence of culture and sports.” With the theme, “Batang Malakas, Bansang Matatag,” DepEd will conduct Kadang-kadang, Tumbang Preso, and Patintero on July 28 as part of this year’s Palaro.

DepEd said that the inclusion of Larong Pinoy in the multi-sport event aims to “promote, preserve, and propagate the country's rich cultural heritage and traditions and ensure that the new generation will experience and help revive traditional Pinoy games.” The said indigenous games, DepEd said, will also “instill teamwork, sportsmanship, camaraderie, friendship, and discipline, among Filipino youth and help improve their physical, emotional, and mental health.” As stated in DepEd Memorandum No. 35 s. 2023, all regions must choose 10 members from their delegation to participate in the Palaro Indigenous games. “Laro ng Lahi” was first introduced at the 62nd Palarong Pambansa in 2019, where the Department’s officials and personnel participated in playing Kadang-kadang, Patintero, Hilahang-lubid and Karera ng Sako. DepEd said that aside from Indigenous Filipino Games, cheer dance, weightlifting, and obstacle course will also be included in the exhibition. Dancesport and Pencak Silat will also be featured as demonstration sports in this year’s Palarong Pambansa. DepEd noted that separate events for learner-athletes with Intellectual Disability (ID), visually impaired (VI), and orthopedically handicapped/amputee (OH) under Special Education (SPED) classes, such as Para-Athletics, Para-Swimming, Bocce, and Goalball, will also be conducted. Around 1,573 medals are at stake in Regular Sports, Para-Games, and Demo Sports in this year’s Palaro.
Partners' support
Ahead of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa, the DepEd conveyed its appreciation to the partners for their support during the Turnover Ceremony of Sponsorships and Donations held at the DepEd Central Office on July 19. “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our esteemed partners for their unwavering support in the 2023 Palarong Pambansa,” Undersecretary for Operations Revsee A. Escobedo said.

“Your contribution has been nothing short of invaluable, playing a vital role in ensuring the success of our student-athletes, technical officials, and all those involved in this prestigious event,” he added. Spearheaded by the External Partnerships Service (EPS), the turnover ceremony was attended by 19 DepEd-Central Office partners, who received plaques of appreciation from the Department for their support. Assistant Secretary for Operations and Palaro 2023 Secretary General Francis Cesar B. Bringas expressed hope that the partners will continue supporting the annual scholastic sports meet and other DepEd programs.
"We welcome you to this event, and we are confident that your sponsorships and your donations for this year will be the same or more by 2024, 2025, 2026, and so on,” Bringas said. “Thank you very much to all of you for answering our call for partnership and convergence with the private sector,” he added.
Bids for 2024 Palaro hosting rights
Even before the conduct of this year’s Palaro, the Palarong Pambansa Board held a special board meeting on the Bidding Presentation of the Bidder-Local Government Units (LGU) for the Hosting of the 2024 Palarong Pambansa. In a separate statement, DepEd said that after drawing lots to determine the order of presentation, Cebu City, Province of Antique, and Province of Negros Occidental showcased their respective bids to claim the hosting rights of the biggest scholastic sports gathering in the country for next year. “A Visayas city/province is set to host the next Palaro following the Luzon-Visayas-Luzon-Mindanao rotation principle,” DepEd said. During the presentation, Mayor Mike Rama of Cebu City, Governor Rhodora Cadiao of Antique, and Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson of Negros Occidental discussed their commitments and what they can offer to cater to the delegation of the Palarong Pambansa in 2024. Soon after, DepEd and Palarong Pambansa Board deliberated to identify the next Palarong Pambansa host. In Palaro's history, Cebu City hosted it twice, in 1954 and 1994, while the Province of Antique conducted the 2017 edition. The Province of Negros Occidental hosted in the year 1971, 1974, 1979, 1998, and 2000. The hosting rights of the winning bidder will be announced at the closing ceremony of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa in Marikina City. The opening ceremony for this year’s Palarong Pambansa is scheduled on July 31. The 2023 Palarong Pambansa will be held from July 29 to Aug. 5.
