Valenzuela gov't breaks ground for aquatic center, columbarium
The Valenzuela City government announced on Saturday, July 1, that it broke ground for the construction of a new aquatic center and columbarium in line with its goal to create more accessible and purposeful facilities and spaces for city residents.
The groundbreaking ceremonies for the construction projects, which will be called the Wellness, Entertainment, and Sports (WES) Arena Aquatic Center and the Valenzuela Family Garden of Life Columbarium with Crematorium in Barangay Punturin, was held on Friday, June 30.
Valenzuela City Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian led the event along with Barangay Punturin officials.

The WES Arena Aquatic Center is a single-storey building that features state-of-the-art amenities such as a four-lane olympic-sized swimming pool, a swimmers lounge, shower room, locker room, generator room, and pump room. It is an extended sports facility that will be built on a 2,707 lot area adjacent to the WES Arena, that aims to provide a space for Valenzuelano athletes in the field of competitive swimming to train and participate in various competitions. It has a total project cost of P60,000,000. Meanwhile, the five-storey circular columbarium serves as an affordable burial place for the departed loved ones of residents. It has several facilities including viewing chapels, around 18,000 vaults, a private family viewing area, an amphitheater, and an expansive garden built on a 6,021 square meter lot area. An estimated P198,644,000 total project cost was allotted for the columbarium. Also present during the ceremonies were Liga ng mga Barangay President Councilor Jonjon Bartolome, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation President Councilor Goyong Serrano, SK Federation officials of Barangay Punturin, Barangay chairmen, representatives from Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), City Health Office Head Dr. Marthony Basco, and Sports Development Office Head Councilor Gerry Esplana. The local government said it actively proposes projects, reclaims, and makes meaningful use of the available landscapes with a goal to serve the residents better while working towards a liveable and progressive city.
