A 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit Surigao del Sur on Sunday afternoon, July 2, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs said the quake struck around 1:40 p.m. and originated 5 kilometers (km) northwest of Lianga, Surigao del Sur.
It occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter.

The tremor was recorded by Phivolcs' instruments at Intensity II (slightly felt) in Tandag, Surigao del Sur, and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro. Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area. However, it does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
