Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte continued delivering commencement speeches, asking college graduates of the Mindoro State University on Wednesday, July 19, to not allow their dreams to be hampered by negative influences, such as drugs and insurgency.

Instead, the official asked them to focus on “nurturing their garden of dreams.”
“Huwag na kayong magpa-distract sa mga bagay na hindi naman makakatulong sa buhay ninyo o sa pamilya ninyo tulad ng mga bisyo, droga, mga illegal na gawain, recruitment sa NPA (New People’s Army), recruitment sa terorismo o kung ano pa man ‘yung alam na natin lahat na makakasama sa buhay ninyo (Do not get distracted by things that will not help your lives or your families like vices, drugs, illegal activities, recruitment to NPA, recruitment to terrorism and whatever it is you know that will bring you harm),” she told the graduates.
“Just focus on your dreams,” the official stressed during the university’s third commencement exercises.
While admitting that life isn’t always going to be easy, Duterte said that an optimistic view will help the graduates see the opportunities rather than the challenges.
“Paalala ko lang sa inyo — hindi magiging madali ang buhay. Pero kahit hindi ito magiging madali, maraming mga oportunidad ang para sa inyo (I will just remind you — life isn’t going to be easy. But even if this isn’t going to be easy, there will be more opportunities for you) if you only learn to look at the brighter side of things,” she added.

The Vice President also asked the graduates not to be afraid of failures and detours because “the light inside of you is stronger than your failure.”
“Pero kahit ganyan ang buhay, tandaan ninyo — walang makakatalo sa apoy diyan sa puso ninyo, sa dibdib ninyo, sa kagustuhan ninyong magtagumpay (But even if life is like that, remember — nothing will beat that fire in your heart in your will to succeed),” she said.
Even if the way to their dreams “seem hard, unconventional, or impossible,” Duterte encouraged them to have the courage to pursue their dreams.
“We should never diminish the value of dreams — no matter how, later in life, we may find ourselves in situations that might break our hearts and spirits,” she added.
