Senator Grace Poe, chairperson of the Senate public services committee, said she is holding the Department of Transportation (DOTr) its word to clear the backlog of license cards by September.

“And, from then on, we expect that the agency will be able to fix its system so that our motorists can get their cards upon application or renewal,” she said. Poe emphasized that the license card should still serve as the primary ID. “The paperless option offered by the DOTr for now must not compromise security and privacy,’’ she pointed out. “This is part of the DOTr's commitment to continuously improve its service to our motorists and the transportation system,’’ she added. The DOTr is expecting the delivery of licenses by next week, initially this will be in trickles. By September, all pending for issuance should be delivered. Early this year, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced that the validity of driver’s licenses expiring beginning April 24, 2023 will be extended to Oct. 31 amid the shortage of plastic cards. The issue also prompted authorities to release temporary licenses printed on paper.
