REFLECTIONS TODAY

It is said that we can never learn anything that we presume to know already. When we are so full of ourselves, we can never learn the way of wisdom and life that Jesus offers us. For this reason, God’s wisdom is hidden from the wise and the learned and given instead to the childlike. Recalling the characteristics of a child makes us want to take once again certain qualities which perhaps we may have lost while growing up. There is a sense of wonder in the child who is amused by the little miracles of life. A child’s eyes brighten in appreciation of small things that a grown-up person may easily dismiss as trifle or uninteresting. A child easily accepts things that are taught to him or her. A child may have questions, but he or she listens to authority. A child is open for exploration. His or her inquisitiveness is fueled by a sense of wonder, and his or her inquiry is rewarded with new discoveries. If we are going to follow Jesus, it will do well for us to let go of our presumptions and discover how his ways can lead to many wonders.

Gospel • Matthew 11:25-27

At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
