PH boxers to train in India and Australia ahead of Asiad
The Philippine boxing team will join two training camps in India and Australia as it prepares for the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China where Paris Olympics berths will be staked.
“Our marching order is to really win the gold medal in Paris,” said Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines president Robbie Puno in the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on Tuesday, July 18. Also in attendance were Puno’s executive assistant Karina Picson and secretary-general Marcus Manalo. Tokyo Olympics silver medalists Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam will spearhead the team undergoing the multi-nation camps in Patiala, India from July 28 to Aug. 6 and at the Inspire Institute of Sport in Karnataka, India from Aug. 6 to 20. The team is composed of 11 boxers, five coaches and a therapist. After their stint in India, they will return to Manila for a 10-day respite before flying to Canberra, Australia for their training in the first week of September. After their Australian training, they will again go back to Manila and stay for another week before seeing action to the Asian Games. Also in the squad were Tokyo Olympian Irish Magno, Aira Villegas, Ian Clark Bautista, Rogen Ladon, Mark Ashley Fajardo, Ronald Chavez, Jr., John Marvin and Tokyo Games bronze winner Eumir Marcial. The Asian Games stake two berths per men’s division and four tickets in the women’s side for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Apart from the Asiad, there would still be two more world qualifiers next year. “It will be tougher in the last two qualifying events because it’s a world level,” said Puno.
