Over 1,300 cyclists join Pasig's 'Padyak ng Pag-asa' bike ride
The Pasig City local government held a community bike ride on Sunday, July 16, in celebration of the city's 450th Araw ng Pasig.
The event aimed to promote cycling as an effective activity to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
According to the city government, more than 1,350 cyclists participated in the "Padyak ng Pag-asa" community bike ride despite continuous rains.
"Layunin ng Padyak ng Pag-asa na i-encourage ang mga Pasigueño, lalo na ang bike enthusiasts na patuloy na pangalagaan ang kanilang mga kalusugan sa pamamagitan ng pagiging aktibo at paggawa ng physical activities tulad ng pagbibisikleta (Padyak ng Pag-asa's goal is to encourage Pasigueños, especially bike enthusiasts, to continue taking care of their health through an active lifestyle and by engaging in physical activities such as cycling)," the local government unit (LGU) said.
The bike ride started at the Pasig City Hall Quadrangle and traversed the 16-kilometer loop in the city.
Upon their return to the city hall, a raffle draw was held where prizes include 450th Araw ng Pasig tote bags containing 450th Araw ng Pasig tumblers, umbrella, water tumblers, and bike helmets.
The LGU previously launched several People Streets benefitting pedestrians and cyclists alike.
According to the Pasig City Transport Development and Management Office (CTDMO), streets included in the initiative would be exclusively opened only to pedestrians, cyclists, and other light personal mobility vehicles from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The program aims to “give back the streets to the people” by providing a safe venue for citizens' recreational activities without the danger of potential vehicular accidents.
It is also an innovative way of transforming roads into open spaces for children to play, senior citizens to relax, and other people to exercise, wander, or socialize.
The CTDMO and the local government have opened various People’s Streets all over the city since 2022. Among these are the following:
\- East Bank Road in Barangay Manggahan \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 6 p\.m\.\)
\- Caruncho Avenue Westbound in Barangay San Nicolas \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 6 p\.m\.\)
\- Lopez Jaena Street in Barangay Sumilang \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 6 p\.m\.\)
\- MH Del Pilar in Barangay Sto\. Tomas \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 12 noon\)
\- Emerald Avenue in Barangay San Antonio \(Saturday\, 6 a\.m\. to Sunday\, 6 p\.m\.\)
\- Kamagong Street in Barangay Bagong Ilog \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 12 noon\)
\- Oranbo Drive in Barangay Oranbo \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 6 p\.m\.\)
Aside from the creation of People's Streets, Pasig City also passed several ordinances for the benefit of cyclists, especially at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when most commuters transitioned to cycling as their new mode of transportation. Among the measures are holding of free bike lessons, requiring all business establishments in Pasig to provide bicycle parking areas, supporting legislation that emphasizes cycling as an essential means of transportation, adding protected bike lanes in roads, and encouraging the use of electric vehicles (EVs) like e-bikes.
