Alvarez submitted Sadegh "Kurdish Warrior" Ghasemi via D’Arce choke in the second round of their featherweight MMA matchup at ONE Friday Fights 25 inside Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 14. What made it more impressive was how the 24-year-old had to adjust days before the bout after his original opponent, Reza Saedi, failed to fly to Bangkok. “Three days before the fight we were informed that Saedi missed his flight. That’s why they had to scramble for a replacement opponent. We checked out [Ghasemi’s] resume. He had a good amateur background, and he knew how to wrestle while having pro Muay Thai experience,” he said. “One thing I noticed though was that he wasn’t too comfortable in grappling. The moment the match hit the ground, he wanted nothing more than to get back up. That’s when I noticed he lacked the confidence in the ground game, and that’s why we focused on that in our game plan.” For Alvarez, there was no way he was going to back out from this fight, especially since he pushed himself over the past couple of weeks to give an excellent performance. “When they told me that my opponent couldn’t fly out, I just thought to myself, whoever they give me, I’ll face. I don’t want to waste my training and all the effort to fly out to Thailand for nothing,” he said. Alvarez is satisfied with how he performed despite the quick change of opponent, and he now hopes that his recent string of impressive performances will get him a contract to compete on ONE Championship’s global events. “I’ve finished both of my opponents so far in ONE Friday Fights,” he said. “So, I’m hoping to get that main roster contract for my next fight.”
