5 MPD cops wanted for robbery-extortion surrender

Five Manila Police District policemen wanted for the robbery-extortion of a computer shop in Sampaloc, Manila surrendered on Monday, July 17. The five were identified as Staff Sgt. Ryann Tagle Paculan; Staff Sgt. Jan Erwin Santiago Isaac; Cpl. Jonmark Gonzales Dabucol; Pat. Jeremiah Sesma Pascual; and Pat. Jhon Lester Reyes Pagar. They are members of the Manila Police District’s District Police Intelligence Operations Unit (MPD-DPIOU). They surrendered to Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) Executive Director Gilbert Cruz at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Monday night. Authorities said the suspects denied the accusations against them. The MPD said the sixth suspect, identified as alias "Menay," who allegedly acted as an accomplice of the five suspects, remains at large. Philippine National Police (PNP) Spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said during the press briefing held at Camp Crame on Monday, that criminal and administrative charges were already filed against the five suspects. Fajardo also noted that the MPD deployed policemen to the victim for security measures. She said 50 other policemen assigned to the DPIOU, including its head, will be relieved for tolerating the five suspects involved in robbery extortion activities. Based on the investigation, the suspects introduced themselves as police officers supposedly conducting an operation against illegal online gambling. They accused the 73-year-old Herminigildo dela Cruz, the owner of the computer shop, of being involved in illegal gambling. The PNP said the suspects did not show any search warrant and were in plainclothes. The suspects demanded P40,000 from the owner in exchange for his freedom. They also took the P3,500 from the victim's table along with the 500-gigabyte computer hard disk drive where the files of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage inside the shop were stored. The victim said that the suspects also demanded P4,000 every week as "protection money" to which the victim complied.
