33 illegally operating ‘talipapa’ stalls closed in Tacloban City

TACLOBAN CITY – Thirty-three stalls in a “talipapa” (makeshift market) in Barangay 62-B Sagkahan here were ordered closed on Monday, July 17, for allegedly operating without the necessary permits.

A task force led by the Business Permit and Licensing Division (BPLD) served a closure order to stall owners who reportedly violated the Tacloban City Revenue Code or Ordinance Number 99-58.

According to the City Information Office, the stall owners were issued several notices of violation but did not comply.

The CIO also learned that the lot where the market is located is owned by the National Housing Authority which causes “complications” in the processing of permits.

The CIO added that they also observed that the location of the market also poses a traffic hazard to motorists and endangered pedestrian safety.

A grace period was given to the stall owners until Tuesday, July 18, to sell their goods after some stall owners appealed to sell their remaining goods.

After the extension, the task force will block and post authorities to prevent vendors from selling in the area again.

Acting Market Superintendent Engr. Danilo Alajas said evicted vendors are welcome to relocate to the five public markets operated by the city government.
