A 41-year-old woman died after being hit by a boulder when a landslide hit Antipolo City, Rizal due to heavy rains brought by tropical cyclone “Dodong” and southwest monsoon (habagat) on Sunday night, July 16.
The rain-induced landslide occurred at a subdivision in Brgy. Santa Cruz around 8 p.m., according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The victim was identified by the police as Dina Saban, who was inside her home when the landslide happened.
“A part of a hill in the said area collapsed due to heavy rains. A house wherein the reported victim resided was hit by a big stone,” NDRRMC information officer Mikee Mabbagu told reporters on Monday, July 17.
Accordingly, a concrete wall at Saban’s house gave in due to the weight of the collapsed soil and crushed the victim to death.
The body of the victim was recovered by responding units from the Antipolo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO).
The incident affected 20 families composed of 53 individuals, and buried 14 houses under rocks and soil including Saban’s.
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said that the number of affected Filipinos due to Dodong and habagat rose to 9,223 families composed of 26,331 individuals.
They were from Pangasinan in Ilocos Region (Region 1); Bulacan, Zambales, and Pampanga in Central Luzon (Region 3); Cavite and Batangas in Calabarzon (Region 4A); Palawan in Mimaropa (Region 4B); and Iloilo in Western Visayas (Region 6).
The NDRRMC expects that the number of affected individuals will further increase as the local DRRM offices in other affected areas have yet to consolidate and submit their figures.
Of those affected, there were 217 families or 849 individuals who were staying in 23 evacuation centers.
The NDRRMC said a total of P381,052 worth of relief assistance have been extended to the affected residents such as family food packs and financial aid.
