Long jumper Janry Ubas guns for a spot in the 2023 World Athletics Championships when he competes in three invitational meets in Europe this month.
Still fresh from his stint at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Thailand, the 29-year-old Southeast Asian Games champion left from Bangkok to Europe on Monday, July 17, in time for the Motonet GP Lappeenranta meet in Lappeenranta, Finland on Wednesday, July 19. The Finnish event is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour – Bronze competition group. After Finland, Ubas will see action in 16th Triveneto Meeting in Trieste, Italy on July 22 before competing in the Internationales Stuttgarter Leichtathletik-Meeting in Stuttgart, Germany on July 29. Both events are part of the World Athletics Continental Tour-Challenger group. While the top honors is the target, Ubas is actually aiming to meet the qualifying standard to earn a ticket to the World Championships slated on Aug. 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary. With the qualifying standard set at 8.25m, Ubas needed to eclipse his own national record of 8.08m to earn a berth and join early qualifiers, pole vaulter EJ Obiena and hurdler Robyn Brown. Ubas fell short in his medal bid at the Asian Championships after finishing seventh with a leap of 7.98m, but is determined to make an impression in the said three European tilts.
