New LPA likely to become tropical cyclone within 1 to 2 days — PAGASA
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, July 17 that the low pressure area (LPA) east of the country has a “high chance” of developing into a tropical depression in the next one to two days.
PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said the LPA, which was last spotted 1,070 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao around 3 a.m., may enter the country’s area of responsibility on July 17.
Its latest forecast track also shows the LPA approaching the country in the coming days.
Historical cyclone tracks in July showed cyclones either heading toward Luzon, or away from the country toward Japan, he cited.
Badrina said the potential tropical depression may not have a direct impact on any part of the country just yet, but he urged the public to continue monitoring PAGASA’s updates regarding this weather disturbance.
The next tropical cyclone name on PAGASA’s list is “Egay.”
Improving weather
Badrina said the southwest monsoon or “habagat” may continue to bring occasional rains to Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro in the next 24 hours. The rest of Luzon and Western Visayas may still have cloudy weather, but the amount of monsoon rains in these areas will be significantly lower than in the previous days, he said. Isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms, however, may still occur in some areas. Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.
