BACOLOD CITY – A man who ran amuck died after he was shot by a barangay official who tried to pacify him in Sitio Montello, Barangay Pinggot, Ilog, Negros Occidental on Thursday, July 13.
Police identified the fatality as Oscar Carollo, 35, of Barangay Villasol, Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.
Police Major Joseph Partidas, Ilog police chief, said that Carollo, armed with two bolos, went to the house of his younger brother’s employer and allegedly threatened him for unknown reason.
Carollo’s brother tried to pacify him but he refused to calm down. They grappled with the two bladed weapons until the fatality’s brother was hacked in the right hip.
Oscar’s employer went to the house of Barangay Kagawad (councilor) Alex Roca and asked for assistance.
Roca responded, along with other barangay officials and watchmen, but Carollo turned his attention to him.
Roca tried to calm him down but Carollo had become more aggressive, prompting the councilman to shoot him in the legs to neutralize him, Partidas said.
However, despite being wounded, Carollo stood up and attacked Roca until he fell into a canal and cornered by Carollo, Partidas said.
Roca shot Carollo in the chest, killing the suspect on the spot, according to Partidas.
Partidas said that Roca voluntarily surrendered to the police but was released after Carollo’s family did not press charges against him.
The Ilog police chief said they did not recover the councilor’s firearm which probably fell into the creek during the commotion.
Carollo’s family told police that this was the first time that he acted violent. They had no idea what triggered Carollo to suddenly act that way, Partidas said.
