The official also visited Pangasinan and Northern Samar recently to give a speech to senior high school graduates.
At the Ismael Mathay Sr. High School in Quezon City, she asked students to take courage when facing life’s many challenges.
“We will make detours. We might fall and bruise ourselves. But we should get up, heal ourselves, and face the world with pride, with courage, with optimism, with faith,” she told 661 graduates on Friday, July 14.
She encouraged the students to be prepared for the surprises they will encounter in their lives, especially as they try to pursue their dreams.
“Do not surrender. Cultivate another garden of dreams. You should, and you must. Why? Because it is your life that is at stake here and the life of your future family members,” Duterte said.
“Hindi madali ang buhay pero magiging puno ito ng oportunidad kung (Life is not easy but this will be full of opportunities if) you look at the brighter side of life,” she added.
Duterte shared her own experience of failing to become a doctor, after which she decided to enter politics.
“I never dreamed of becoming the Philippine Vice President. Politics was not that garden I was cultivating growing up,” she said.
“God had a different plan for me. And God's plan is something we cannot change or defy,” she added.
If there’s one thing she learned from failing to achieve her dream, it was to "follow the path that leads us to a place that allows us to reach our full potential".
“This is where we become excellent individuals — a value here in your school, excellently serving others, our communities, and our beloved country,” the Vice President said.
Duterte was joined by Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Quezon City 6th District Rep. Ma Victoria Co-Pilar.
