'Dodong' may strengthen into tropical storm before leaving PAR

The state weather bureau on Saturday, July 15, said that Tropical Depression Dodong may become a tropical storm before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

"Before it ('Dodong') exits the PAR, it has a high chance of strengthening to a tropical storm and a severe tropical storm once it leaves, before going to the southern portion of China," Weather Specialist Benison Estareja said in a mix of English and Filipino.    In its latest bulletin issued at 5 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said "Dodong" has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph. It was spotted moving westwards at 20 kph over the coastal waters west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur. 

'Dodong' to exit PAR
"Based on the latest track of PAGASA, it is expected in the following hours that it may pass the West Philippine Sea before leaving the Philippine Area of Responsibility in the afternoon," Estareja said.  Tropical Depression Dodong is expected to exit PAR between the afternoon today (July 15) and tomorrow morning (July 16).
 

Enhances southwest monsoon

 
Even after the exit of 'Dodong' in the next few days, it may still enhance the southwest monsoon or, in local terms, "habagat." "Kaya asahan parin po ang epekto ng habagat sa mga susunod na araw, kahit naka labas na ng PAR itong si Dodong (That is why, it is expected that 'Dodong may affect 'habagat' in the next few days, even it exits PAR)," weather expert stated.

Gale warning
Since the tropical depression is currently in the West Philippine Sea, PAGASA hoisted a gale warning signal No. 1 in the western seaboard of Luzon.   Thus, marine vehicles should take the necessary precautions. *(Sonny Daanoy)*
