Young Pinoy bags gold in int’l math olympiad in New York ​


Francis Deinmel Legaspi, a 10-year old student from Olongapo City, has won a gold medal for the Philippines in the 4th Copernicus International Math Olympiad held at Columbia University in New York, U.S.A from July 9 to 13, 2023.

An incoming Grade 5 student at the Special Education Center for the Gifted (SPED-G Kalayaan) located inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Legaspi bested over a hundred finalists from 22 countries across the globe.
 
A math competition veteran, Legaspi has won gold medals in the Hong Kong International Math Olympiad, Thailand International Math Olympiad, Southeast Asia Math Olympiad, Philippine International Math Olympiad and the World International Math Olympiad.
 
Copernicus Olympiad is an international competition platform in which students from 3rd to 12th grade compete in mathematics and astronomy. 
 
The international competition aims to increase students’ interest in science, as well as developing their academic skills, and unlocking their potential with like-minded peers from all around the world.
 
His father, Dennis Legaspi, thanked Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara for continually providing support since his son started joining the international math competitions at the age of six.
 
Mr. Legaspi also acknowledged Abdon C. Bayla, SPED-G Kalayaan’s school principal, and Francis' personal math coach, Mr. Ricardo Quejado.
