The Pasig City local government will offer free biking lessons on Saturday, July 15, as part of its efforts in promoting cycling as a more environment-friendly mode of transportation and an effective activity to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
Cycling is an environment-friendly mode of transportation and an effective activity to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
The free biking lessons will be held on Emerald Avenue in Barangay San Antonio from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Interested participants no longer need to register for the program and may just go directly to the venue.
The city government said the free biking lessons were made possible by Pasig City, through its Pasig Transport, in partnership with Bicycle Friendly Philippines and Pinay Bike Commuter Community.
Emerald Avenue in Barangay San Antonio is tagged as a "People's Street" by the city government as part of its People's Street initiative.
According to the Pasig City Transport Development and Management Office (CTDMO), streets included in the initiative would be exclusively opened only to pedestrians, cyclists, and other light personal mobility vehicles from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The program aims to “give back the streets to the people” by providing a safe venue outdoors for citizens to conduct recreational activities without the danger of potential vehicular traffic accidents.
To compensate for the lack of green spaces in the compact city of Pasig, it is also an innovative way of transforming roads into open spaces for children to play, senior citizens to relax, and other people to exercise, wander, or socialize.
The CTDMO and the local government have opened various People’s Streets all over the city since 2022. Among these are the following:
\- East Bank Road in Barangay Manggahan \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 6 p\.m\.\)
\- Caruncho Avenue Westbound in Barangay San Nicolas \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 6 p\.m\.\)
\- Lopez Jaena Street in Barangay Sumilang \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 6 p\.m\.\)
\- MH Del Pilar in Barangay Sto\. Tomas \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 12 noon\)
\- Emerald Avenue in Barangay San Antonio \(Saturday\, 6 a\.m\. to Sunday\, 6 p\.m\.\)
\- Kamagong Street in Barangay Bagong Ilog \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 12 noon\)
\- Oranbo Drive in Barangay Oranbo \(Sunday\, 6 a\.m\. to 6 p\.m\.\)
Aside from the creation of People's Streets, Pasig City also passed several ordinances for the benefit of cyclists especially at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic where most commuters transitioned to cycling as their new mode of transportation which include free bike lessons, requiring all business establishments in Pasig to provide bicycle parking areas, supporting legislation that emphasizes cycling as an essential means of transportation, adding protected bike lanes in roads, and encouraging the use of electric vehicles (EVs) like e-bikes.
