NAPC joins forces with other agencies to fight illegal fishing
The National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) joined forces with 14 other agencies and signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to support the "Task Force Contra IUUF" that will ensure coordination among partner agencies in preventing Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing (IUUF) in Western Visayas.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 12, NAPC said the agreement was signed on July 10 to secure and maintain the joint implementation of the partner agencies. It will also serve as a platform to provide livelihood assistance to fishermen to reduce poverty in their communities and discourage illicit fishing to maintain maritime ecosystems. "The local poverty reduction actions plans should focus on providing services to have adequate food, decent work, education, decent housing, and highest attainable standards of health," NAPC Secretary and lead convenor Lope Santos III said. "That is why we are also reaching out to other sectors, including the private sector, development partners, and even civil society organizations because we need to converge all the players," he added. Santos stressed the Commission's role in coordinating the government's poverty reduction initiatives. NAPC, as a policy oversight and coordination body, will collaborate with these agencies to facilitate the appropriate implementation of the joint initiatives outlined in the agreement. The NAPC met with Carles Mayor Siegfredo Betita and other Iloilo-designated agencies representatives, including Regional Director Remia Aparri (BFAR-Western Visayas), Police Regional Office (PRO), Philippine National Police Maritime Group (PNP-MG), and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). It also coordinated with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Transportation (DOT), Northern Iloilo State University (NISU), and Iloilo Provincial Government. The NAPC vowed to collaborate with other partner agencies to help eradicate IUUF in Western Visayas waterways and offer livelihood to impacted fisherfolk communities during the closed harvest season. *(Rhowen Del Rosario)*
