ILOILO officials present the memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the Greening of the Iloilo Airport Gateway, a 19-kilometer tree planting and tree growing project. (Iloilo Capitol PIO) In a press conference on Thursday, July 13, Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. said that the “Greening of the Iloilo Airport Gateway” project is underway with a recent signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) to facilitate coordination and collaboration. The initiative of the Iloilo City government under the administration of Mayor Jerry Treñas expanded its tree-planting program from Iloilo City to Iloilo Airport which straddles between the towns of Santa Barbara and Cabatuan. The 19-kilometer stretch will have native trees on the national highway here leading to the Iloilo Airport. Defensor said that the Iloilo City government is providing 1,300 seedlings of various species of flowering trees such as Kasopangil, Malabago, Salinggogon, Siar, Labayanan, Bakan, Balitbitan, Bani, and Catmon. “This is not only tree-planting, but this is tree-growing,” Defensor said. Signatories to the MOA were Mayors Elizalde Pueyo of Cabatuan, Dennis Superficial of Santa Barbara, and Laurence Anthony Gorriceta of Pavia town. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP)-Iloilo and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-6 are also partners.
