CBCP condemns performer's act as disrespectful, unacceptable

Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Commission on Liturgy Chairman Capiz Archbishop Victor Bendico strongly condemned a performer’s act of wearing a Black Nazarene costume while singing an upbeat version of the Lord’s Prayer (Ama Namin).

The performer known as  Pura Luka Vega posted a video on Tuesday showing himself in a Black Nazarene costume while singing a pop-rock version of the Ama Namin. “May God have mercy on him. The sacred liturgy is a sacred celebration where God encounters His people through His word and the sacraments. The liturgical celebrations of the Church should glorify God. God must never be disrespected. They are meant to sanctify people and not to disrespect others,” Archbishop Bendico said over Radio Veritas. While there are netizens who cited Vega’s act as “art,” many condemned his performance as sacrilegious and disrespectful to many Filipinos who are Catholics. “God is present there whenever the Word of God is read, through the person of the minister, whenever people are gathered in His name and in the Body and Blood of Christ. These teachings alone of the Liturgical Constitution of Vatican II are clear indications that the liturgical celebrations should be respected. They are celebrations of the Church and not of individual persons who make fun of them to attract attention. They glorify God and sanctify people,” stressed Archbishop Bendico. For his part, Fr. Jerome Secillano, executive secretary of the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Public Affairs, said the actions of the people in the video were “completely disrespectful.” “People should be extremely prudent in their actions, especially with regards to using elements of religion and faith for secular purposes. If not used properly, such actions border on mockery and profanity,” the CBCP official said. Meanwhile, Bataan Representative Geraldine Roman said the actions of Vega will not help in their cause for the public to respect the rights of the LGBT Community. Senator JV Ejercito and Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri likewise condemned the act which they said was blasphemous. Vega’s now-viral video was captioned “Thank you for coming to church!” and had an emoji of hands folded in prayer. Another clip showed Vega near the end of his performance taking a handkerchief to wipe his face, apparently mimicking Black Nazarene devotees.
