Tolentino unhappy over MTRCB's decision on 'Barbie'

Published Jul 12, 2023 04:49 am
Senator Francis Tolentino is sad but respects the decision of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to allow the public viewing of the Hollywood movie "Barbie." Tolentino said the MTRCB should have followed the suggestion of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to just have deleted the supposed controversial ‘’nine-dash-line’’ scene in the movie and this could have settled the issue. But the MTRCB does not see it that way and instead insisted that it is not a ‘’line-dash-line’’ but an ‘’eight-dash-line.’’ Through its alleged historical basis, China is claiming vast portions of the South China, including the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). In 2016, the United Nations Arbitration Court rejected China’s historical claim. Tolentino said he wanted to see in a clear depiction of the Philippine territory in the "Barbie" movie and that an 'eight-dash-line," "nine-dash-line" or "seven-dash-line" does not actually matter. But what hurts is that China continues to encroach on the country’s EEZ and affecting the livelihood of Filipino fishermen, he complained.  Philippine military authorities have complained that Chinese Coat Guard and militia vessels have become more aggressive by engaging Philippine Coast Guard vessels in near collision situations. The Philippines has fired off hundreds of diplomatic protests but Chinese incursions remain. The MTRCB earlier gave the go-signal for the public viewing of the controversial Hollywood film "Barbie." Tolentino and Sen. Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada, earlier blasted the depiction of China’s contentious nine-dash line in the movie. The MTRCB stated that it has conducted two review sessions and consultations with relevant government agencies, including a legal expert on the West Philippine Sea. It has, thus, given the film “Barbie” a Parental Guidance (“PG”) rating, which means viewers below thirteen (13) years old must be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult. "Considering the context by which the cartoonish map was portrayed in the film, the Review Committee is convinced that the contentious scene does not depict the ‘nine-dash line.’ Instead, the map portrayed the route of the make-believe journey of Barbie from Barbie Land to the ‘real world,’ as an integral part of the story,’’ MTRCB said in a statement. "Rest assured that the Board has exhausted all possible resources in arriving at this decision as we have not hesitated in the past to sanction filmmakers/ producers/distributors for exhibiting the fictitious “nine-dash line” in their materials,’’ it added. The MTRCB statement further emphasized that  "the Board sternly warns all filmmakers, producers, and distributors that it will not hesitate to sanction and/or ban films that depict the 'nine-dash line' for being contrary to law, pursuant to Section 3(c)(d) of Presidential Decree No. 1986, the Republic Act No. 9522, otherwise known as the Philippine Baselines Law, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s South China Sea Arbitration Award, whose anniversary we, as a nation, are celebrating today.’’
