PNP hurt by allegations of lapses, extortion in Las Piñas POGO raid
Officials and personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP), particularly those involved in the raids in an alleged Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) hub in Las Piñas City are hurting over allegations of serious lapses and extortion during the operation.
This, as PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo reiterated that the Las Piñas operation was legitimate and underwent proper procedures amid the criticism of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla that there was lack of coordination which resulted in the sloppy case build-up.
Such lack of proper procedure resulted in the order to release the five Chinese who were charged for allegedly running an illegal operation in relation to human trafficking and cybercrime laws.
“We are hurt and saddened by statements and allegations but we respect that. But as far as the Anti-Cybercrime Group is concerned, they have done the necessary coordination with the IACAT (Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking),” said Fajardo.
“In fact, during the initial stages of the implementation of the search warrant, there were prosecutors present and the ACG said that there were prior coordinations made,” she added.
Fajardo explained that the PNP has been very transparent during the conduct of the operation which resulted in the rescue of more than 2,700 Filipino and foreign POGO workers in Las Piñas City.
Sen. Raffy Tulfo also revealed, citing his reliable sources, that there were attempts to extort money during the Las Piñas operation.
Fajardo, however, denied the allegation but said they are now coordinating with the office of Tulfo for more information as she stressed that the PNP is open to any investigation that would be conducted pertaining to the issues.
“We already reached out to the Department of Justice and even to Senator Tulfo to discuss these matters, including the measures to strengthen the cases,” said Fajardo.
For his part, PNP chief information officer Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan assured that they will comply with the order of the DOJ to release the five Chinese who were arrested in Las Piñas raid.
