Marcos gov’t gets majority approval ratings on 10 major issues, survey shows

The Marcos administration received majority approval ratings on 10 out of 13 issues on which its performance was assessed, based on the June 2023 Pulse Asia survey results, which were released on Tuesday, July 11.

According to Pulse Asia, the current administration has the highest approval rating for protecting the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (76 percent), followed by addressing the needs of calamity-hit areas (73 percent).

It found that the lowest majority approval ratings were on issues of enforcing the rule of law (56 percent), creating more jobs (53 percent), and increasing workers’ pay (52 percent).

Furthermore, approval with the government’s anti-poverty efforts was the “plurality” sentiment (43 percent), while essentially the same level of approval and indecision (44 percent versus 39 percent) was reported about the government’s anti-corruption efforts.

“On the issue of controlling inflation, the only issue identified as an urgent national concern by most Filipino adults (63 percent), about the same percentages of the country’s adult population either disapprove of the administration’s performance (37 percent) or express indecision on the matter (32 percent),” Pulse Asia said.

Pulse Asia noted that while there were significant changes in the government’s assessment between March and June 2023, the “public evaluation of the work done by the national administration is generally positive.”

“Appreciation becomes more pronounced toward the latter’s efforts to control inflation (+6 percentage points), create more jobs (+8 percentage points), and increase the pay of workers (+8 percentage points),” it said.

Pulse Asia pointed out that disapproval eased on issues of job creation (-10 percentage points), poverty reduction (-10 percentage points), and inflation (-15 percentage points).

Meanwhile, levels of indecision increased on issues of reducing poverty (+6 percentage points increase), fighting criminality (+8 percentage points increase), fighting corruption in government (+8 percentage points increase), and controlling inflation (+ 9 percentage points).

Pulse Asia’s “Ulat ng Bayan” survey was conducted from June 19 to 23, 2023, using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adult respondents nationwide.

It has a +/-2.8 percent margin of error for national estimates.

Subnational estimates for the geographic areas covered in the survey have +/-5.7 percent margin of error for Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
