The National Innovation Council (NIC) has been officially constituted following the appointment of six out of seven executive members, a crucial step towards fostering a culture of innovation in the country.
Chaired by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and vice-chaired by National Economic and Development (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan, the NIC serves as a 25-member policy advisory body comprising representatives from both the public and private sectors.
Among the members are 16 ex-officio national government agencies, and seven executive members representing the private sector, including business, academe, entrepreneurs, and the science community.
The newly appointed private sector representatives include Gisela P. Concepcion, a respected figure in the field of marine science. Also joining her is Ria Liza C. Canlas, who serves as the director for innovation at National University.
Mark Sultan D. Gersava, an award-winning innovator, social entrepreneur, and international speaker, also joins the ranks of the NIC.
The NIC is further strengthened by the inclusion of Monchito B. Ibrahim, a seasoned expert in information and communications technology.
Meanwhile, Tirso A. Ronquillo, the president of Batangas State University, brings his vast knowledge in the field of education and research to the council.
Completing the roster of private sector representatives is Earl Martin S. Valencia, co-founder of Plentina, an AI and financial technology start-up specializing in the credit and robo-advisory sector.
The seventh and last executive member position on the NIC has been designated for a climate change expert, who will bring a crucial environmental and sustainability perspective to the country's innovation initiatives.
Currently, the NEDA Innovation Staff, which serves as the Secretariat of the NIC, is leading the search for a qualified candidate to fill this role.
Established in 2019 under the Philippine Innovation Act, the NIC is the country's highest policy advisory body and primary coordinating entity for fostering innovation initiatives in the country.
Given its pivotal role, the NIC is tasked with facilitating and supporting the development of a dynamic innovation ecosystem.
Through effective innovation governance, the NIC aims to direct the energies of this administration toward creating the future we aspire to achieve.
